Energy efficiency first
The EU's energy efficiency directive was already established in 2012, was updated in 2018 and 2023 and is today a framework and regulatory framework for achieving the EU's ambitious goals for energy efficiency. It is not only a necessity for reaching the EU's climate goals, but also an important part of securing a sustainable future for our energy use. Today, it is more important than ever to improve energy efficiency because we are facing major challenges with electrification and the green transition. We are pleased that the EU is taking major steps by revising the Energy Efficiency Directive to put "energy efficiency first" and that it will become a fundamental principle of EU energy policy.
The key points in the revised version from 2023 include
- Goals – The directive establishes a binding goal for all EU countries to reduce energy consumption by 11.7% by 2030.
- Energy efficiency first – The principle of 'energy efficiency first' means that energy efficiency must be considered in all political and investment decisions, giving it a legal standing for the first time.
- National Contributions and Gap-Filling – Countries are to set national contributions based on objective criteria. An enhanced 'gap-filling mechanism' ensures that countries falling behind catch up on their contributions.
- Industry Inclusion – To optimize energy savings in the industrial sector, all industries, regardless of size, consuming energy above a certain amount, must conduct an energy audit. This includes small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) where significant potential for energy savings exists. At the same time, the directive mandates energy management systems as a mandatory requirement for large industrial energy consumers to monitor and optimize their energy efficiency.
Energy efficiency is not just a global goal; it is a reality we must confront. Our fundamental value is to support this journey towards sustainability by providing a smart and intuitive energy management system.
